Design by Harri Koskinen
Born in 1970, Harri Koskinen’s uncompromising, bold design aesthetic has earned him international recognition from the earliest days of his career. Practicality, minimalist styling and a conceptual approach to product and spatial design are Harri’s trademarks, and have won him such accolades as the Kaj Franck Design Prize, the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize, the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Compasso d'Oro Prize.
Since the original 6040A, Harri has played a key role in the development of countless Genelec models, and has brought a unique voice to the aesthetic of our loudspeakers and subwoofers. Thank you, Harri.

Sustainability is in our nature
With our headquarters located in a beautiful region of Finland, environmental responsibility has always been important for Genelec. Long product lifecycles and total reliability were a must. But now those positive product attributes have a new purpose. Today most of us realise the negative impact that a disposable culture has on our environment.
Thus it is critically important that we all value technology that is built to last and that can be repaired easily for decades – just as we have from the very beginning. Over the years, technological advancements have enabled significant improvements in sustainability. For example, the Genelec factory is now powered entirely from 100% CO2 free and partly renewable fuels, and long-distance travel is now avoided in favour of remote meetings whenever possible.
Recycling also remains a priority for the company. And that’s something that both we and our customers can admire in the environmentally friendly 6040R with it’s recycled, die-cast aluminium enclosure. It’s aluminium that, at the end of its long life, will be completely recyclable once again.
A loudspeaker ahead of its time
Back in 1999, Genelec founder Ilpo Martikainen wanted to produce a loudspeaker with more aesthetic appeal than the traditional standard ‘wooden box’ design. He also knew that curves were the optimal shape for the acoustical use of space, and would result in more truthful, less coloured loudspeaker performance.
That same year Ilpo met designer Harri Koskinen, who knew that aluminium could be shaped easily to deliver the curves that Ilpo was looking for. So Harri set to work bringing Ilpo’s vision to life, and the original ground-breaking 6040A was launched in 2001 to widespread acclaim.
Easy on the eyes. Even easier on the ears.
Now, the re-imagined 6040R features many of the technologies that we’ve refined over the last 20 years, including professional grade LF drivers, proprietary Class D power amplifiers, and tight integration with our GLM room calibration software. This results in a loudspeaker with increased power output, lower power consumption, higher SPL, wide phase linearity, and performance that’s completely optimised for your room.
So, users of the 6040R can expect:
- Clean performance and a consistently smooth frequency response.
- Uncoloured reproduction across a wide listening area.
- A listening experience that can be optimised for any acoustic environment.
- Plug-and-play simplicity. Just connect a high quality sound source - and enjoy!
- The detail and accuracy that the world’s engineers and artists have come to rely on.

Group delay
The latency at high frequencies from the input to the acoustic output, measured in the analog input:
Extended Phase Linearity in GLM set to OFF
2.9 ms
In Genelec performance graphics, the time of converting the from an electronic input signal to the acoustic output in a Genelec monitor is described by two factors – latency and group delay. The group delay factor can be read in the graphics for a specific frequency. The total frequency-specific input-to-output delay is a sum of the latency and group delay factors. To understand the significance of this total delay, consider that moving a loudspeaker away by 1 meter creates an additional delay of about 3 ms.
